About Us


We have a team of seven permanent members of staff and one volunteer. All staff are experienced, enthusiastic and committed. Six are qualified to level three standard, of which four have been working for St Paul’s Preschool for between 10 and 20 years. Two members of staff have close links with the church and uniformed organisations locally.

There are five members of staff working with the children each day, with a maximum of thirty-two children. Activities may be run as a whole group, small groups or occasionally one-to-one.

All the staff are trained in paediatric first-aid and have a food hygiene qualification. All staff attend training courses on a regular basis and keep up to date with practice in early years education.

St. Paul’s church, Crofton has a long history of providing for the children in the local community. The Church Hall was built in 1933 and was home to a private nursery school. When the owner retired the Reverend John Tebbeth set up St Paul’s Playgroup in 1967 for children in the Parish.

With the arrival of the Reverend Chris Reed in 1980, the pre-school became open to all children and this has remained so ever since.

St. Paul’s Church, Crofton is a welcoming, lively Church of England church whose vision is to serve the local area.

From the late 19th Century, when a chapel of ease was built, to the present day the church at Crofton has grown and flourished.  When the original building was outgrown by the congregation the present church was built in 1958 incorporating the old church as the chapel.

Today St.Paul’s Crofton is a community of people of all ages and backgrounds, and this is reflected in the range of groups and activities that take place.

Activities for children and teenagers include a weekly Toddler group; St. Paul’s Crofton Pre-School; Age-specific groups during the Sunday Service; Club night; Children’s Holiday Club; and Uniformed Organisations.

There are also adult Bible study groups; women and men’s groups; a Senior Citizen’s Lunch Club; and courses are run for those seeking to find out more about the Christian faith.

St. Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-School has been running successfully for a number of years supported by a Management Committee. The committee consists of a team of 9 people.

The Parochial Parish Council (PCC) provides a chairperson, a treasurer, a child protection officer and 2 PCC representatives whilst the pre-school provides 2 staff members and 2 parent representatives. One of the committee holds the role of secretary.

The full committee meets 4 times a year to discuss issues pertaining to the running of the pre-school and to review policies. In the autumn there is an annual budget meeting and an annual coffee morning in January which all parents are invited to attend.

Key Person

At St. Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-School we believe that a child will settle into the setting best when they have a key person they can relate to, someone who knows them and their family well and can meet their individual needs. Research shows that the key person approach benefits the child, their parents/carers, the staff and the setting by promoting secure relationships in which children thrive and the parents have confidence.

Behaviour Management Policy

At St. Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-School we understand the importance of developing a child’s self-esteem by praising them for behaving in a kind, considerate way to others, sharing toys and taking turns during play. Adults in the setting provide a positive role model for the children with regard to friendliness, care and courtesy. To help the children feel secure the routine of the morning is explained verbally and with the use of a visual timeline so that the children know what to expect.

If a child behaves in an unacceptable manner, it will be made clear to them in a developmentally appropriate way, that it is the behaviour, not the child that is unwelcome.

Complaints Policy

At St. Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-School we are committed to providing the highest quality care and education for all our children. We believe that children and their parents are entitled to be treated with courtesy and that attention is paid to their needs and wishes. We aim to work in partnership with our families and the community we serve. We welcome suggestions about how we can improve the pre-school at any time.

Risk Assessment Policy

St. Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-School believes that the health and safety of the children are of paramount importance. To ensure our setting is a safe and healthy place for the children, parents, staff and volunteers, we carry out daily risk assessments to identify hazards and then implement control measures to reduce/eliminate risk before the session starts.

Special Educational Needs Policy

At St Paul’s (Crofton) Pre-school we aim to identify any special educational needs as early as possible through early identification using observations and records of individual children. We will take appropriate action to meet those needs, thus enabling all children to have access to all available activities and the National Curriculum.

Through regular informed meetings with parents, staff and where appropriate outside agencies we will monitor progress, discuss observations, strategies and Individual Education Plan targets for children with special educational needs.

We are committed to providing a socially inclusive community: no child will be discriminated against because of disability or learning difficulty.

We will keep parents informed of any concerns we have about their children and ask that we are kept informed of any concerns they may have or actions taken.

Safeguarding Children Policy

We believe that children and adults flourish best in an ordered environment in which everyone knows what is expected of them and children are free to develop their play and learning without fear of being hurt or hindered by anyone else.

We intend to create in our pre-school an environment in which children are safe from abuse and in which any suspicion of abuse is promptly and appropriately responded to.

All appointments, both paid and voluntary, will not be confirmed until a check has been carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and the Pre-school Management Committee and leader are confident that the applicant can be safely entrusted with children.

All staff are alert to the possibility that a change in children’s appearance, behaviour or play may indicate abuse, and will discuss any action with the designated person.

We promote British Values, encouraging children to express their preferences, share and take turns. They explore why rules are important and the consequences of their behaviour. The children also learn about feelings, how to make and keep friends and to respect and tolerate different faiths and beliefs.
